Chapter 15

Blue Moon Chain - The Coalition
Viridis Company
The Pavilion

Like the entry on the other side, the way led through high stone arches. There was only one set of these though, and no stairs leading up to them and no stairs leading down. Instead, the grass and the rock fell down and away into a river far far below. Whatever tempted Alisana to take that step, Fiona didn't see it.

Then there was the moon. It covered half the sky, more than half, a huge toppling thing like she'd seen in movies where aliens attacked.  Her astronomy class had covered planets and meteors and gravity in general but she'd taken it when she was twelve. She'd never paid much attention to what her mother worked on either, but she knew enough to know this wasn't right. "That moon is very big."

Jay glanced off to the right where lights sparkled in the treetops. The same lights shone in the water and in the sky and in the dark forests. "Yes it is. Too big."

Fiona turned away from the arches and the cliff and looked around. Little buildings stood next to one another, each one with a door, one with stairs, two with a lamp, and every single one surrounded by what looked like algae-lined pools. She paused, listening. The dead were here, but not many of them, and they were very old. Some of them were confusing, ancient and non human.

Drake Alcaide stopped at a little distance from them and spoke in a low voice with a boy about her age.  Jay looked down into a pool's dark water. "Do you know what any of this is?"

"Do I look like I live here?" she snapped. As if she knew anything more, which she might but wasn't in a mood to share it until she had some idea why her mother sent for him, and why her father needed him, and what these people intended to do about it.

A red-headed woman stood in a place made out of white stone lit by two enormous standing lamps topped with dragon heads. Drake left them, went down the walk and greeted her with a brief hug that seemed more friendly than romantic. Fiona thought crossly, I'm so tired, I'm going to fall down in one of these gross pools while they hug each other.

"Where are we?" Jay asked the boy who had Alisana's pale hair but not her inhuman eyes.

He smiled at both of them, the smile lingering a little longer on Fiona.  "I'm Marek of Redhill.  You're in Viridis Company at the Pavilion."  He jerked his head toward the bay. "When you walk through those arches, if you can walk through the arches, this is where you land."

Something behind him moved.  It was the white dragon.  The long tail whapped against the brick of another wall as he turned a corner into the trees.

In a slow steady deliberate voice, Jay said to Marek of Redhill, "Yeah I know we came through the arches. I showed up on the other side, Drake Alcaide invited me in, and here we are. What's going on? Somebody needs to start talking."

Marek glanced at him, looked back at Fiona, considering maybe, then began to talk sincerely about the name Alcaide. "Alcaide is a title. It means Warden. Drake's father released the prisoners in Pirene during the war and they called him the Warden because of that. We keep the title in his honor, but it's easier to just say Drake Alcaide instead of Drake the Alcaide."

Jay stared at him.  Fiona said politely, "How interesting."

Jay and Marek kept looking at one another which Fiona decided to let them do without intervening - she didn't really know what to do anyway.

"Fiona's here to find her parents.  I'm here because I'm a Lombardo, evidently the easiest one to catch.  Tell me, why do you need one?

Marek shot a sharp, thin smile at Jay as he began to turn away and said, "Someone thinks you can save the world."

I'm all caught up with the old overhauled chapters now so it's finally time to look at this, most recent one. And there's so much to look at that I don't even know where to begin!

First things first, the setting. The setting is just... oh gosh. You truly succeeded in capturing the magic of this other dimension, so similar to our own and yet so different. The huge moon in the sky, the odd mausoleums with their pools of algae-ridden water, the unusual lights flickering everywhere... it's all so beautiful, so magical! So unfamiliar yet serene, which I guess is appropriate seeing as it's a burial ground. Another perfectly executed cemetery! ;) Gate Rock will always hold a very special place in my heart, but the Pavilion definitely comes in a close second. I wanna see more of it!

I also love, and I really mean LOVE, what you did with the lighting here! So many unusual light sources, from dragon lamps to hanging lights and even some flying ones (what even *are* those? Fireflies? Fairies? Something else entirely?), and they all create such a gorgeous intertwining of light and shadow on the characters and the buildings, (and the dragon!). Take Marek for example: he's practically glowing in the dark! ;) You'll forgive me a little bit of bias here, but I can't help but feel so proud seeing my Marcus in Viridis Company - he fits so perfectly in the setting it's almost uncanny! I'm particularly proud that you chose him of all sims to introduce our two brave protagonists to the new world they've found themselves in... and if you'll allow me some more bias, I really hope he's not just a one-time character and that we'll get to see more of him in the upcoming chapters (entirely your own fault, you've thoroughly spoiled me! ^^) Although I must say, he *might* have dumped a bit too much weight on Jay and Fiona's shoulders all at once. Saving the world? Take it easy, kid! It's been a long day for everyone, on either side of the veil, and these teens were just trying to get closure or at least some answers. Looks like they found way more than they bargained for, though...

Now, the characters. Robanna and Drake Alcaide and Vaun and Shell and Marek and the woman with the unsettling eyes and the knife on her hip, they're all such an intriguing bunch! So Alcaide is a title, and not a surname? And he inherited it from a dead father who was somewhat of a war hero but met an untimely demise? Those are some fascinating new details (and potential plot bunnies to look forward to!) Fiona's theory about him looking like a Lombardo isn't confirmed yet so we don't know where he got his looks from, but one thing's for certain: he absolutely *is* a looker. ;) The fact that he's not immediately hostile to the teens is a good sign, and also the fact that he actually let them pass through the arch-portals. If things go south, at least we know that Fiona and Jay have an Alcaide on their side! Where the other Viridis guys stand with them is yet to be seen though. Robanna is giving me some pretty threatening vibes up on that pavilion, but I might be wrong. I really hope I am.

I know I say this for every new chapter, but it keeps being true so I'll keep repeating it: I'm looking greatly forward to reading more! You promised more dragons and I'm holding you to that promise. ;)

    2. I told you I was going to come up with a cemetery that I hoped you would like! This one was more challenging to actually build that Gate Rock, a lot more challenging, but I agree, the Gate Rock itself is such a brooding evocative thing it's hard to come close. And yes, there will be more dragons!

The lighting. Thank you! You know how hard it is to get lighting to work. I adore those dragon lights. The small wall ones don't give off much light so they're not as striking but the standing ones are fantastic. I love the little sparkling flying lights too and they're not accidental.

Nobody is a one-on walkby in this thing, least of all Marcus-Marek whom I have been wanting to use for a very long time. For a while I couldn't get him to unpack properly, don't know what the problem was because this time it worked just fine. I've others made and waiting a long time too including Drake and Robanna.

I don't think Fiona would shy away from saving the world or at least considering it her responsibility. Not sure about Jay. He's not going to demand to go home though, and actually he was told there was no guaranteed way to go home. Except for Alisana and (maybe Hailie since she gave Fiona the magic dragon), nobody seems to be able to go anywhere at will. Ok, somebody snatched Kenley so maybe it's a little more amenable to opening on command.

Drake is definitely a looker! I have a couple of old shots I'll post. And the Lombardo connection, maybe it goes the other way right? They look like him, as in he comes first, they come second.

You absolutely keep me going. Thank you thank you! And btw I love your BACC update!

  2. Save the world... that is a tall order to carry on young shoulders. As always, more drama, more questions, and some answers. Beautiful.

  3. Ooooh what an ending! I'm so intrigued, I mean could they be there to help save the world. It's such an interesting concept, stepping in through a doorway and into another world. I wonder if Fiona and Jay are regretting stepping through the archway.

I kept checking out the background in the shots, the little buildings, the little pools, and the stairs leading to the pavilion, it all looks wonderful!

    1. LOL well if they're expected to save the world, it's going to intimidate both of them. Kenley Dirac thought Jay could help in some way since she tried to reach him, tried harder than she did her daughter. And there's Fiona's father, the 'magician'. Fiona has the quest but Jay may be handed the sword.

I am so glad you liked that place. It was both really hard to come up with an idea and then took more than one try to get it right. It's going to have limited usefulness I'm afraid so it may have to just sit there as background but I'm happy with it. I really really appreciate the compliment!

Thank you so much for reading and leaving a comment. It means a lot.

    1. Yeah, poor Jay, he knows he's in for it, doesn't know why, and would rather they go find one of his relatives and use them instead. Not happening! Thank you for reading all this and leaving me comments, it really means a lot to me and helps to know it makes sense.

  5. I really liked how you began this chapter: it was very "show don't tell" in terms of the characters' reactions. Fiona's "That moon is very big" comes off as being something concrete she can focus on not to freak out, and her short temper also points to her discomfort. Jay on the other hand seems very monotone, like he's clenching his teeth and just wants to get this over with.

I feel a bit bad for him though. It seemed like he was reaching out to Fiona with the question "Do you know what any of this is?", especially since he's someone who doesn't care to initiate conversations normally. Too bad Fiona's reaction wasn't a good one, she needs to realize that Jay's on her side.

The surrounding (village?) looks so good! I love the pillars, white drapes, the dragon theme torches, the hanging lanterns, the ponds and all of the stone. It reminds me of old european villages, such as Visby in Sweden, (if they had dragons, that is, haha!)

Poor Fiona though, being that exhausted going through all this. I bet Jay's just as tired.

I really enjoyed the backstory on Alcaide, it was very inspired and realistic. I'm sure that's how a lot of names came to be in the past, a description of what someone worked with, or a title, and then simplified for everyday use. Brilliant!

What with Marek checking Fiona out, and then his staring contest with Jay, felt a bit like a challenge haha! And Jay's body language screams "back off" to me. But that might just be the hopeless romantic in me wishing for Jay and Fiona to get together <3

So there it is, someone thinks Jay can save the world. From what, I wonder: very exciting! I bet Jay's not very pleased by that, haha! Great chapter! /Ani

    1. Fiona is finding herself somewhat sidelined. Jay is the one getting all the attention, which she knew was going to happen but definitely doesn't like it now that it's happened. They're not a team. She doesn't have the freedom of movement, the freedom to set her own pace and choose her own path because Jay's in the way. She didn't help him out when she should have - you're right, she snapped at him.

I wrote something a long time ago and used the name Alcaide. It's from Arabic: al "the" + qāʼid "leader, commander", usually commander of a fortress, eventually over hundreds of years, going through Spain and the Spanish language, coming to mean the warden of that fortress.

Jay has competition LOL! So far he doesn't see Fiona in any role but accidental companion but that companionship is important. He needs her. Marek is very different so Fiona would have a very clear choice to make if she ends up making one, and that depends on what Jay wants too.

Poor Jay. He definitely doesn't want anybody to tell him he's supposed to save the world!

You are so kind to write these detailed comments! Thank you!
